It estimates how many days you can keep a used car before profit hits your minimum, then zero. It uses what you paid, reconditioning, expected sale price, monthly holding cost, and an optional yearly market decline.
Profit today is the expected sale minus the purchase cost and minus reconditioning. Each day subtracts the vehicle cost. Depreciation does not cut the same amount every day: it is a percentage of the price you could still sell for on that day, not the first day’s price — so the drop gets smaller as the car is worth less. The deadline is the day profit hits your target, then zero.
Everything it costs to keep the car another month: interest, lot space, insurance, wash, taxes, etc.
